Indiana has developed a remarkable soccer tradition—one built by players, coaches, referees, administrators, volunteers, families, schools, clubs, colleges, and communities that have helped grow the game across the Hoosier State.

The story of Indiana soccer stretches back decades. Organized soccer began taking root in the state during the 20th century, with high school soccer emerging in the 1960s. Argos became Indiana’s first recognized boys state champion in 1973, while Carmel captured the first recognized girls state championship in 1984. The IHSAA began administering boys and girls soccer during the 1994–95 school year.

Indiana’s collegiate soccer tradition has been equally influential. Indiana University became a varsity program in 1973 and, under legendary coach Jerry Yeagley, developed into a national powerhouse. The Hoosiers have won eight NCAA men’s national championships, while producing generations of players who went on to represent professional clubs and the United States on the international stage.
